What to expect | Newborn session edition!
It is finally time, your newborn session is quickly approaching! Don’t stress though, I have almost everything covered for you! I have lots of headbands, hats/bonnets, wraps, & props we will use during the session. The only thing I ask is that if you have something specific you’d like to use for the session that you bring that in. I aim to make the session the least stressful time in the newborn stage because believe me, you’re going to need it in those first few weeks.
So not only have you decided to capture these precious moments of your life, but you chose me to do so! A few days before your session I will send out a questionnaire for you to fill out & a prep guide to help you for the session!
When you arrive in studio we will get started right away! Sometimes it may take baby some time to settle in and go to sleep & that’s ok, or some babes will come in and be fast asleep but no matter what, we will make it work. If you’re doing family or sibling shots, we will do those first. That way if dad or siblings need to leave they can! & not to mention the warmth of the studio, you’re going to want to strip layers mid way. After we do family/sibling shots we will then move on to just babe by themselves. I typically start with baby wrapped up in prop shots. Then once those are done we move on to unwrapping them and see how they feel about being stripped down! We will finish the session off with some naked poses to show off those baby rolls. This can be switched around, it all just depends on how babe feels about everything!
The length of the session will be based off of how well babe sleeps & if they need to eat. I aim to have you out of studio in under 90mins. If babe needs to eat more or takes more time to settle down, then the session may last longer but that is totally ok! So come on in and relax, really! Take a nap on the couch or catch up on Facebook newsfeed while I work my baby whispering magic on your babe!
Buffalo Cake Smash Session
Cake smashes… Ooo cake smashes!! I don’t even know where to begin with my love for these!
Designing a setup for a cake smash is probably my favorite part because it lets my creativity flow. Even though I lean towards, and actually prefer simpler setups, there’s still a whole process behind setting it up. I have to figure out what I want the cake to be, what props (if any) that I want to use, how to setup them up, & what backdrop will look best with it all. I typically ask parents if they have a theme or colors in mind they’d like to use & go from there! I am totally open to suggestions or inspirations but usually parents just tell me do what I do best, design it!
Cake smash sessions are all about eating some delicious cake, or just smashing some delicious cake. Either or work just fine for me! But, you’d actually be surprised at how many littles don’t tear into their cake. I typically have parents help tear apart the cake to make it look like they ‘destroyed’ their cake. Some babes aren’t fans of new/different textures or even the sweetness of the cake & that is just fine! I like to refer to it as ‘fake it till we make it’. I always suggest introducing a cupcake or a frosting texture to them before the session so they aren’t so afraid of it when we plop them down in front of a cake. I do have to admit, crying cake smash images are kind of amazing too!
Don’t even fret about the clean up either! A quick baby wipe bath works just fine! Or sometimes we will have to wipe them down with a wet washcloth if they really enjoyed their cake. Either way, your little one will go home smelling like a sweet treat with some smooth skin!!
It’s never too early to start planning your little ones cake smash! Feel free to email me & we can start planning the big day for them!
Buffalo Newborn Session Prep
Newborn Session Prep
Prepping for a newborn session can be overwhelming for many parents! There’s so many questions - what to bring, what to wear, what if baby doesn’t cooperate, all the what if’s…. But don’t worry! I always send out a prep guide to help new parents prepare for their newborn session. I am going to run down most of the same questions I receive when parents are booking their newborn session!
1. What should we expect?
- You should expect to come into studio and relax! No, really, do it! Once you arrive I will take baby and get them stripped down and asleep if they are awake. You can sit down on my sofa, enjoy some snacks or water & just relax, take a nap if you’d like (don’t be surprised at the amount of parents I have had do this!)! I always have an assistant working with me for newborns so I have all the help I need. I want this to be a relaxing experience for parents. Ps. The studio will be very warm too so I suggest dressing in layers just in case you get too warm but you can always step outside to cool off if needed.
2. What do we bring?
- In lesser terms, nothing. I have a studio packed full of newborn props, wraps, headbands, backdrops, buckets, etc. I only ask that you bring something if there is something specific you’d like to be in the photos. I really don’t suggest the crotchet outfits because they generally don’t fit babies like we would like them to & end up up looking really big on them.
3. What should we wear? (if you’re doing parent/sibling shots)
- Keep it simple! I love the look of neutral tones & simple outfits. There’s no need to go out and buy a new outfit because chances are you already have a simple shirt in your closet! Don’t even worry about what is on your bottom half, I do not photograph new mom’s mid section. So wear those yoga pants & be comfy! For older siblings, I always suggest the same thing. 99% of the time I will have sibling cuddled up with baby laying on the fluffy rug or they will be sitting up cuddling them.
4. What if baby doesn’t cooperate?
- Please don’t even let this be a concern in your mind! I will just say they don’t call me the baby whisperer for nothing! Most of the time babes come in sleeping & adjust quickly because I keep my studio very warm for them. I also play a shusher sound machine with white noise, this really helps keep them asleep and drown out any background noise going on. If for some reason baby is wide awake, I will wrap them like a little burrito and sway with them until they fall asleep. Or, I will photograph them swaddled while they are awake. Typically the swaddle soothes them & they fall asleep while wrapped. I can do many setups with baby wrapped to give a variety of images. If baby will absolutely not settle and cries for 2-3hrs straight, I will see you next week haha! I can assure you though, that has literally only happened once in my 9+yrs of photographing newborns.
Jensen | Milestone Session
O Miss Jensen! I have photographed this sweet babe so many times already in her first 7 months of life!
I photographed her mommy & daddy for their maternity session at Knox Farms in East Aurora, her Fresh 48 session at Mercy hospital in Buffalo, NY, newborn session in studio, we did a lifestyle session in home for her 6 month session, & then she came to visit me for her sitter session in studio again!
She is a straight face babe, ha! She doesn’t like to give up her smiles easily. We pulled out all the tricks with her & she wasn’t having none of it. But, she wasn’t crying at us and that’s what I always tell parents - as long as they are not crying, we are perfectly ok!
I recently started these simple sitter sessions & I am in LOVE with them!! The simplicity of a babe and their little details is everything. The wooden toys just add to the setup! The backlighting has also become a quick favorite of mine because well, it is amazing!
